Antti Suhonen

Finnish bass-baritone Antti Suhonen graduated from the Sibelius-Academy in Helsinki and continued his training through attendance at master classes with Professor Dr Herbert Brauer, Reri Grist, Tom Krause, Charles Farncombe, Victoria de los Angeles, among others. He also joined the International Opera Studio in Zürich and made his debut at the Zürich Opera already during the same autumn. At the Finnish National Opera he made his debut in 1982.

After his studies Mr.Suhonen was engaged with the Baden State Opera Karlsruhe in Germany. Several guest appearances led him to the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and Semperoper Dresden as well as to Wiesbaden, Mannheim, Hannover and Essen. At Deutsche Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin as well as at Deutsche Oper Berlin he sang as a regular guest from 1993 until 2001.

From 1989 until 2001 Antti Suhonen was permanently engaged with the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki. In the same time he made regularly also guest appearances for example at the Royal Opera in Copenhagen, appearing often at the Savonlinna Opera Festival in Finland as well.

He worked with such conductors as Nello Santi, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Daniel Barenboim and Pierre Boulez and the directors Jean-Pierre Ponnelle, August Everding,Harry Kupfer, Gian-Carlo del Monaco and Götz Friedrich. Alongside his opera career Mr.Suhonen frequently appeared as a concert soloist as well in his home country Finland as in Europe, United States and East Asia. His repertoire included all major oratorios,masses and cantatas.

Antti Suhonen had in his wide opera repertoire the major classical opera roles such as Leporello/ Don Giovanni, Figaro/Le nozze di Figaro, Don Alfonso/Cosi fan tutte, Sprecher /Die Zauberflöte, Basilio/Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Dulcamara/ L´Elisir d´Amore, Sparafucile/Rigoletto, Enrico/Anna Bolena, Doktor/Wozzeck, Mephisto/Gounod´s Faust, Rangoni and Warlaam/Boris Godunow and Bluebeard/Bartok’s Bluebeard’s Castle – in addition to contemporary Finnish operas such as Rautavaara´s Vincent, Bergman´s The singing Tree and Sallinen´s The Palace.

For many years, Mr.Suhonen charmed audiences with his brilliant interpretation of Fra Melitone in the Savonlinna Opera Festival´s La Forza del Destino, a production which was later invited to Tel Aviv in the summer of 2001. Audiences of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem came to know Mr.Suhonen on 1999 in a production of Strauss´Ariadne auf Naxos with Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. He also performed Schönberg´s Moses und Aron in Chicago and Berlin with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Pierre Boulez.

In Finnish National Opera, he was known as a celebrated Mozart-singer in Mozart´s Da Ponte -operas Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni and Cosi fan tutte, and specially praised also for his outstanding portrait of Gunter /Die Götter-dämmerung in the first ever Ring Cycle production 2000 at the Finnish National Opera directed by Götz Friedrich.

After his career as a singer, Mr.Suhonen has been teaching in the Vocal Department and Opera master´s programme at Sibelius-Academy in Helsinki, giving additional Master classes outside the Academy as well.
